UFC 148 - My Take On It!

Okay kids, everyone who watches the fights see something different. What you're going to get in my reviews is my take on it plain and simple. So, on with the show. I watch the fights at my local UFC gym. By the way, if you don't belong to one you are missing out. I get there a little before 6:00 PM and always have a front row seat to the 56 inch screen. I love watching the prelims because you get a mix of fighters on the rise and mainstream fighters. The 6:00 PM fight was Gleison Tibau vs Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Round One was pretty even. It was obvious that Khabib is not as disciplined as Gleison. Most of his punches fares from wild with no science behind it. He attempted a single leg takedown that did not work. That attempt also had no science behind it.
Round Two. Two more attempts at a single leg takedown by Khabib and the second one resulted in a takedown by Gleison. It was obvious at this point that Gleison had taken several shots to the right eye. Khabib was in a clinch with Gleison up against the cage and for some reason the Ref separated them. I still haven't figured that out. Khabib try to finish the round with a jumping front kick that had nothing. Not a great round.
Round Three. Nothing special to speak of. Gleison's right eye bleeding slightly under the brow. The usual back and forth. Khabib wins the fight. My guess is that he won it punches thrown.

Melvin Guillard vs Fabricio Camoes
Round One. Fabricio started out very aggressive only to be taken down with punches and clinches up against the cage. This round is filled with back and forth takedowns. With a takedown into a quick top mount, Fabricio started to ground and pound Melvin, and it look like Guillard was in trouble. They both get up and just that quick Fabricio misses a kick and gets taken down by Melvin who proceeds to do his own version of ground and pound. Round Two. This had a slower start than the first round with both men knowing it could go either way. Fabricio gets a single leg takedown and they both roll to the side of the cage, stand up and separate. At this point Fabricio is looking as if he could win this fight. In the final 40 seconds of this round, both men trade heavy blows and switch off controlling the fight.
Round Three. Obviously both men are worn out from the last 40 seconds of the previous round as they come out looking very slow. Slow back and forth through most of the round. Not much to speak of. Fabricio gets a single leg takedown and a leg lock in the final seconds. My opinion is that Fabricio should win on points because he got more takedowns, the fight was that close. The judges decide that Melvin wins, unanimous 30 to 27. Fabricio was robbed, plain and simple.

Ivan Menjivar vs Mike Easton
Round One. Ivan starts the round off pacing and stalking, while Mike is constantly bobbing and weaving. Easton does this for the entire fight. Ivan has two nice spinning heel kicks to Mike's calves. In the final seconds of the round Ivan clinches with Mike up against a cage wall. Mike fakes a right hand and a left hand and completes a great kick to the side of Ivan's face. This round is pretty even.
Round Two. Nothing special about this round, and the crowd is starting to boo. I hate that. Your fighter on a friggin in UFC pay per view and you're not hit somebody? Mike seems more aggressive than a much action. He is setting the pace by constantly moving forward however. 10 seconds left, and mike annex with knee flying the to the chin of Ivan.
Round Three. In this round Mike comes out really aggressive. Ivan is clearly not sure what to do because he has not been able to handle Mike's style and aggression. Ivan tries a spinning kick and mike ducks under it to make a sweet takedown. However, they both stand up again and are not hitting each other. This prompts the crowd to boo at the end of the fight. Mike has clearly won on points and the judges agree.

Chad Mendez vs Cody McKenzie
Round One. This only went one round. Cody tries to throw several kicks only to look like an awkward schoolgirl who was a foot taller than all her classmates and is trying to do cartwheels. It was embarrassing. It only took 35 seconds. Chad caught one of these awkward kicks and drove a punch straight through Cody's stomach. Down goes Cody. Chad had a little ground and pound to top it off a Le'snd the fight was stopped. The closeup camera shot of Cody looking up from them at shows a very shocked Cody Mckenzie.

Dong Hyun Kim vs Demian Maia
Round One. This only went one round. Demian quickly ties up Dong and gets a takedown. His hands clenched tight around Dong's stomach. They land hard on the mat with Dong's hand underneath the spot that Demian had a hold of. The Ref stop the fight. It looked as if Dong may have broken a rib. Demian wins.

Cung Le vs Patrick Cote
Round One. Cung Le may be 40 years old, but he quickly started the fight off proving he has earned his reputation and immediately took down Patrick. Several nice exchanges between the two. Nothing devastating or memorable but constant action for a pretty even round.
Round Two. Nice reverse he'll kick to the head by Cung Le. The left brow of Cung Le seems to have a cut right below it. A lot more banging by both in this round. Nice combos and flurries by Patrick. The last 40 seconds of this round saw both fighters clinching and heavily trading blows. Pretty even fight so far.
Round Three. Patrick, having experienced the awesomeness and power of Cung Le's kicks constantly closes in. They clinch and Cung Le gets a takedown. Patrick tries getting a takedown but it does not happen. Cung Le gets a takedown and Patrick pulls guard. The two stay this way until the end. Cung Le wins on points.

Forrest Griffin vs Tito Ortiz
Round One. Forrest comes out swinging and throw and kicks. Tito is obviously slower. The effects of his neck and back injuries are evident throughout the fight. Tito gets a takedown and lands some great shots from inside the guard. Great exchanges between the two. Tito failed at an attempted takedown at the end of the round due to his slowness.
Round Two. Both fighters get into some heavy banging which leads to Tito nailing Forrest in the face and knocking him down backwards. Tito is slowing down and getting hammered by Forrest. The last 2 minutes of the round and we see Tito merely defending while Forrest is attacking. At the final seconds Tito once again goes for a takedown and fails, Forrest rewards him with several hammer strikes to the head.
Round Three. Tito nails Forrest and sends him rolling backwards and gets the takedown. Tito gets inside the guard and is hanging on knowing this is the end. He's too tired to even to any damage to Forrest and settles for having control for over a minute. They get up and Forrest takes his time setting up Tito and punching him at will in the face. But obviously let up on Tito at the very end when he could have devastated him easily. It was like watching a Rocky movie with Rocky not winning. Directly after the end of the fight Forrest walks out of the cage and down the aisle with Dana White chasing him. He comes back to the cage grabs the microphone from Joe Rogan and does his own interview with Tito. Of course, Forrest wins the fight.

Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen
Round One. Well, before the fight Chael talked a lot of smack about how he was going to beat Silva's pussy ass. That did not happen tonight. Chael came out fast and furious and gets the takedown. He struggles in the guard attempting to punch Anderson. Chael tries hard to pass the guard slamming the sides of Anderson's head with open hands. Finely, Chael gets the mount with only 30 seconds left.
Round Two. Once again Chael rushes in for a clinch against a cage. Anderson pushes off and Chael attempts a spinning back fist that does not connect. If it had, perhaps he would not have fallen down. But that was not the case. This led to his demise. Anderson takes the advantage and jumps on him pounding him until the Ref stops the fight at 1 minute and 55 seconds of round two. So much for beating Silva's pussy ass.
